Weak Fundamentals Stunt Futures Rally Once Again

Natural gas futures bulls tried to capitalize on Thursday’s momentum in early Friday trade by pushing the July contract north of $4.100, but profit-takers had other ideas as the prompt-month contract reversed course in a hurry to close the day’s regular session at $3.835, down 12.2 cents from Thursday’s finish.

Shippers Sought for LNG Export-Related Pipe

Pacific Trail Pipelines LP (PTP) is seeking shippers for its proposed C$1.2 billion, 463-kilometer (288-mile) Kitimat to Summit Lake Looping Project (KSL Project). Capacity takers would eventually be able to transport Canadian gas to the proposed Kitimat LNG Inc. terminal for liquefaction and shipment to more lucrative markets in the Pacific Rim.

Profit-Takers Leave Futures 7.9 Cents Down Friday

Playing a little bit of “give-and-take” on Thursday and Friday, the June natural gas futures contract met Thursday’s 7.5-cent run-up with a 7.9-cent drop in Friday trading. The prompt month closed Friday at $6.401, after trading between $6.38 and $6.48 with 53,838 contracts changing hands.

Retail Gas Choice a Hard Sell in Colorado

There are still no takers in a plan to unbundle Colorado’s gas utilities, but at least two utilities may be warming to the idea. A meeting in mid-July of the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to discuss natural gas local distribution company unbundling, gas utility plans and consumer issues concluded with only two companies — the largest ones serving the state — reporting that they might provide unbundling programs. Just not now.
