Pennsylvania DEP Paves Way for Use of Acid Mine Water in Fracking

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has finalized the process it will use for encouraging and reviewing proposals to use mine-influenced water, such as acid mine drainage, in oil and gas extraction operations from shale formations.

ZaZa Energy: We’re Unlocking the Eaglebine

Houston-based ZaZa Energy has completed drilling and casing its Eaglebine Stingray A-1H well in Walker County, TX, and said evaluation results are “very encouraging,” with estimates of 21 Bcf of gas and 29 million bbl of oil per section in place. ZaZa said it expects to begin hydraulic fracturing operations on Nov. 12, with initial production planned for late November.

BLM, Forest Service Tweak New Onshore Drilling Rules

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service are jointly proposing further revisions of regulations governing oil and gas activity on public lands, supplementing an earlier proposal published by the two agencies last July and reopening the comment period for 30 days.

Supplementing the company’s previously released earnings andreserve results, Barrett Resources reported that its 2000 naturalgas production increased 18% over production levels recorded in1999, from 95 Bcf to 112.4 Bcf. For the fourth quarter 2000, thecompany posted a realized average sales price of $4.01/Mcf,compared to 1999’s fourth quarter level of $2.06/Mcf. Due to thisfact, the company expects fourth quarter 2000 recurring net incomewill increase to nearly five-times the 1999 results for the sametime period. The gas production increase follows the company’spreviously released 303% reserve replacement and 21% increase ingas equivalent reserves to 1.4 Tcf for year-end 2000 (see DailyGPI, Jan. 29).
