Rockies Snowstorm, Other Cold Areas Lift Most Prices

With temperatures below freezing from the Rockies into Western Canada and a snowstorm in much of the Rockies being supplemented by 30s lows in much of the Midwest and falling mercury in the Northeast, it was hardly surprising to see cash prices extend their gains Wednesday. The previous day’s futures gain of 5.4 cents also was a bullish factor.

Softness in the cash market extended to almost all points Friday as existing negative price influences were supplemented by the usual weekend demand decline in the industrial sector.

Some Firmness Lingers Amid Overall Price Dips

Following two days of mostly higher quotes, the cash market acknowledged the continuing bearish nature of weather, screen and storage factors — supplemented by the extra decline of industrial load associated with a long holiday weekend — by falling from a couple of pennies to around 40 cents at a solid majority of points Friday. Westcoast Station 2 was a special case in plunging about C80 cents.

Latest News Reports from Algeria Cite LNG As Potential Source of January Explosion

News reports from Algeria, supplemented by comments from that nation’s Washington, DC-based ambassador, cite the possibility that a liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline leak may have been the cause of the explosion and fire that killed 27 people Jan. 19 at the Skikda liquefaction plant that processes natural gas for oceanic transport as a liquid.
