With stranded ethane in the Appalachian Basin starting to find markets, Sunoco Logistics Partners LP is looking at ways to move other natural gas liquids (NGL) from the region.

Shale gas production in the Haynesville and Marcellus shales was the bright production star in February, while output in the traditional, maturer regions fell due to cold weather and maintenance/repairs, according to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) monthly natural gas report.

The build-out of pipeline infrastructure in recent years has contributed to the efficiency of the nation’s natural gas delivery grid, as previously stranded gas can now reach high-demand markets. New trading activity and pricing locations have emerged, prompting NGI to establish new price indices for Transwestern San Juan (TSJ) and the Clarington, OH, terminus of Rockies Express (REX).

Looking to tap into stranded natural gas in the state of Kentucky, Australian-Canadian Oil Royalties Ltd. (ACOR) said it has signed a general pooling agreement on the Park City Gas Field in Kentucky and also plans to construct a low-pressure gas gathering system to get gas from the project to market.

TransCanada Corp. last week filed an application under the Alaska Stranded Gas Development Act (SGDA), which assures fiscal terms should the company and the state come to an agreement on building a gas pipeline project. TransCanada now plans to proceed with processing its right-of-way application for the Alaska Highway pipeline.

Congress went home for the holidays last week with a massive $400 billion overhaul of Medicare under its belt, but passage of a comprehensive energy bill eluded it for the third year in a row. The bill became deadlocked in the Senate when Republican-led proponents were unable to find two additional votes to push the measure through, effectively stranding the bill in Congress until next year. GOP leaders vowed to pick up where they left off when they return for the second session in late January.
