Tennessee said due to limited operational flexibility, mild weather and tests of affiliate Southern’s Bear Creek storage field starting Tuesday (see below), it will implement a systemwide OFO Action Alert effective Wednesday until further notice for all Balancing Parties. See the bulletin board for OFO Action Alert conditions.

Transportation Notes

On Friday Transco became the most recent pipeline to take action against positive imbalances threatening its system integrity. Starting Saturday and until further notice, Transco said it would not allow any due-pipeline imbalance make-up nominations or excess storage injections, and no incremental parked gas or return of loaned gas would be accommodated.

Cooling Load Still Light, But Prices Up a Bit Anyway

The market didn’t stray from the seesaw pattern it had set earlier in the week. After starting out Monday with losses that often were about a dime or higher, prices had rallied somewhat to a near-flat performance Tuesday before yielding to small declines Wednesday. They reversed course again Thursday with mostly small upticks in spite of seeing no appreciable increases in cooling load.

Consol Preparing Utica Shale Drilling

Consol Energy Corp. is returning to the Utica Shale. The Pittsburgh coal and gas producer recently announced plans to run six rigs starting this fall, five on its acreage in the Marcellus Shale and one full time in the Utica of eastern Ohio.

Kitimat LNG Now Backed by a Horn River Trio

Encana Corp. has joined its Horn River producer peers Apache Corp. and EOG Resources Inc. in the Kitimat liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal project on the west coast of central British Columbia (BC) and its associated gas pipeline. Encana is taking a 30% stake in the project, which will target Asian markets with western Canadian gas supplies.

Shifting Weather Causes Wide Price Move Variations

Blizzard conditions that were still continuing in some areas but starting to fade in others, along with fluctuations in pipeline activity to handle low linepack, made for a wild mix of both large and small price declines and increases in Thursday’s market. Increases modestly outnumbered the declines.
