The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last week gave another speedy go-ahead to a natural gas pipeline expansion that will serve the capacity-strained California market, as well as southwestern region — a 230 MMcf/d looping of El Paso Natural Gas’ South System that’s expected to be in operation by Aug. 31 of this year.

It looks as though Millennium Pipeline’s long wait for a FERC ruling is going to last a little longer. Instead of getting a speedy Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), the pipeline must wait until FERC can examine its proposed route change in New York, Daniel M. Adamson, director of the Office of Energy Projects, told project sponsors.

While claiming FERC doesn’t want pipeline companies to have topay “ransom” to landowners, Commission Chairman James Hoecker saidpipelines must do a better job of hammering out early, innovativedeals with property owners affected by their projects.
