The Ontario Energy Board has approved applications from Spectra Energy Corp. subsidiary Union Gas Ltd. and Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. for 15-year contracts to move natural gas from the Appalachian Basin into the Union Gas Dawn Hub in Ontario on the Nexus Gas Transmission system.

Spectra Energy Corp. applied at FERC on Friday for a certificate to construct the $2 billion, 1.5 million Dth/d Nexus Gas Transmission project, which would supply markets in Ohio, Michigan and the Dawn Hub in Ontario, Canada with natural gas from Appalachia.

As Spectra Energy Corp. moves forward with a trio of natural gas projects in New England, a top executive said the pipeline industry should focus on meeting the demands of FERC rather than placating pipelines foes, and said a shortage of qualified contractors to build pipelines in New England could have an impact in as little as two years.

Spectra Energy Corp. and Spectra Energy Partners (Spectra) along with Northeast Utilities on Tuesday launched their Access Northeast project, a $3 billion expansion intended to address supply reliability issues and spiking prices for natural gas in the New England market. Mainly, the project would target gas-fueled power plants and their peak-day gas demands.
