Transportation Notes

Kern River said that linepack is high on all areas of its system. As reported last week, Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) is planning maintenance on Line 225 Tuesday through Thursday that will reduce the total available capacity at Wheeler Ridge to 140 MMcf, a reduction of 740 MMcf. The available capacity will be allocated to the upstream pipelines, Kern/Mojave, Pacific Gas & Electric, and Occidental, based on the respective scheduled quantity from two days prior.Columbia Gas said that Tuesday will be deemed to be a “Critical Day” in Market Area 21. Based on forecasted markets, available facilities and capacity utilization, the pipeline projects that all available capacity to Market Area 21 will be required to meet firm service obligations, leaving no excess capacity. Therefore, zero non-firm capacity is available to that market area.

Sempra Earnings Double on High Wholesale Power Sales, Commodity Prices

Despite a $24 million loss taken on the sale of a UK-based retail energy marketer, San Diego-based Sempra Energy reported first quarter earnings that more than doubled results in the first quarter last year ($197 million, or 85 cents/share, versus $88 million, or 42 cents/share).

SoCalGas Completes Three Transmission Pipeline Upgrades

With a fourth expansion set to be finished this summer, Sempra Energy’s Southern California Gas Co. utility unit earlier this month completed three other expansions of its transmission/storage system. Collectively the enhancements will boost SoCal’s system by 11% or 375 MMcf/d.

Questar’s Pipe Project Still Stymied by SoCalGas

Questar Pipeline Co. said it is one major step closer to making its Southern Trails project a reality. The company said it secured a long-term gas-transportation contract for the entire initial capacity on the east zone of the project. The 705-mile pipeline, which runs from Blanco, NM, to Long Beach, CA, is divided into two zones, east and west. The east zone has the capacity to transport 80,000 Dth/d from multiple receipt points in the prolific San Juan Basin near the Four Corners area to multiple delivery points at or near the California state line.
