NRG No Longer Bullish on Gas-Fired Plants

Reporting some sobering financial results for year-end 2010, NRG Energy Inc.’s CEO David Crane talked in less than bullish terms about the prospects for natural gas-fired generation and his company’s bet on new nuclear generation in Texas during a conference call with financial analysts Tuesday. But Crane was still upbeat about solar energy and the inevitability of “sustainability” becoming a key market factor in energy development.

Promising “painful” budget recommendations to come, California Gov. Jerry Brown reaffirmed his commitment to renewable energy and efficiency programs as part of a sobering inaugural speech following his swearing in last Monday in Sacramento as the 39th governor of the state. Missing in his brief remarks was any mention of climate change, environmental issues or traditional fossil fuels.

Avista Makes Executive Moves, Underscoring ‘Back-to-Basics’ Strategy

With a sobering re-emphasis of its basic energy and energy-related businesses, Spokane, WA-based Avista Corp. announced last week that two of its longtime executives were retiring, and rather than filling the positions the company will collapse their duties into expanded roles for two existing executives at the company. It is part of a “realignment” of its overall management structure that stresses “back-to-basics,” a company spokesperson said.
