NEB Approves Petro-Canada’s Medicine Hat Pipeline

Petro-Canada has won the latest round in a continuing drive by Canadian natural-gas producers to foster a competitive market in pipeline services. The National Energy Board (NEB) granted Petro-Canada approval to lay a bypass, called the Medicine Hat Pipeline, past southeastern Alberta facilities of TransCanada Pipelines Ltd.’s Nova Gas Transmission. The project also detours around earlier bypass lines built in the prolific production region by Alberta Energy Co (AEC).

The American Public Gas Association (APGA) has called on the Energy Information Administration (EIA) to begin collecting and disbursing “relevant and timely” natural gas production and consumption information on a regular basis to help temper the “extreme price swings” in the market.

Just back from recess, Democrats in the House of Representatives last week continued to round up support for a discharge petition that would force consideration of energy price-cap legislation on to the House floor. The Democrats now need less than 60 signatures from lawmakers in order to move the price-cap bill sponsored by Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA), directly to the House floor.
