Wednesday Shift to All-Points Gains Unsustained

Just when it had seemed the whole market was finally in agreement on further severe cold through the rest of January and the corollary that a couple of mostly bullish weeks were upcoming, prices got thrown for a loop again. Doubts were arising again about how severely cold it will be in the closing weeks of the month. Whereas flat to much higher numbers had reigned throughout the market Wednesday, only a few locations that were flat to up nearly 20 cents avoided a near-total turnaround into negative territory Thursday.

After lifting the rest of an OFO Action Alert for its six furthest upstream zones Tuesday, Tennessee said a new one with systemwide impact would be implemented Sunday. It cited limited operational flexibility, mild weather and upcoming Hebron/Ellisburg storage field tests as reasons for the OFO, which requires affected shippers to not exceed a tolerance of 2% of scheduled quantities or 500 Dth, whichever is greater, for overdeliveries into the system and undertakes from the system.

Northeast Finally Gets In on Rising Price Action

Northeast citygates, after holding back from the overall advances posted in the rest of the cash market in the first two days of this week, handily led gains at nearly all other points Wednesday. The general price strength occurred despite severely cold weather not being predicted for Thursday outside northern sections of the Northeast and Rockies, the Upper Plains and much of Canada.
