FERC Targets High CA Gas Prices in Latest Action

Calling high natural gas prices in California “a matter of serious concern,” the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is considering an initiative that would require gas sellers and transporters serving the market to submit information on volumes and prices on a regular basis to ascertain if corrective action is warranted.

FERC Awards PD to North Baja Pipeline

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission set its seal, pending environmental review, on another westward-bound pipeline project last Wednesday. The North Baja Pipeline will carry up to 500 MMcf/d from a connection with El Paso Natural Gas near Ehrenberg, AZ, to fuel power plants and gas distribution systems in Northern Mexico and Southern California.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last week signed off on requests by ISO New England and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) to extend the $1,000 per megawatt hour (MWh) bid caps in their energy markets, but only through the end of October. Meanwhile, a FERC official said that in his view, once the caps expire later this year, that may very well spell the end of such caps in both New York and New England.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last week gave another speedy go-ahead to a natural gas pipeline expansion that will serve the capacity-strained California market, as well as southwestern region — a 230 MMcf/d looping of El Paso Natural Gas’ South System that’s expected to be in operation by Aug. 31 of this year.
