Northeast Rebounds Big-Time, Rest of Market Softens

As presaged by reports of falling numbers in late deals Wednesday, prices fell between about a nickel and 30 cents at most points Thursday with seriously cold weather remaining largely confined to the Midwest, Northeast and some parts of the Rockies. Northeast citygates, where a return to the deep freeze was impending following Thursday’s brief respite from frigid conditions, again ran contrary to overall trends with gains on either side of a dollar.

Western Losses Greatest in Overall Moderate Price Retreat

As presaged in late declines a day earlier, the physical market began to retreat for the most part Thursday from two strong surges earlier in the week. The Northeast cold snap that had helped generate the bullishness of Tuesday and Wednesday was expected to be yielding to milder weather during the weekend.

Cash Downturn Was Not Hard to See in Advance

As presaged Tuesday by late retrenchment in cash quotes and ascreen drop that carried over into Access trading, the cash marketwas in full retreat Wednesday. All points were off by at least anickel or so, and most of the decreases were around a dime. In whatwas described often as quiet trading, the softening Henry Hubfutures contract for June was the only significant influence oncash that sources could cite.
