Cincinnati-based Cinergy Corp. said that next year’s profitsmight exceed expectations because of its growth from the purchaseof power plants. Cinergy now expects earnings per share for 2000 tohit the consensus estimates of $2.55, however next year, thecompany expects to grow 8% through merchant purchases.

The Energy Information Administration said in its SeptemberShort Term Energy Outlook it is projecting natural gas prices atthe wellhead will increase by about 87% this winter (October-March)compared to last winter. Residential prices for gas are expected torise on average by 27% compared to last year. For the entire year,the average wellhead price for natural gas is projected to be$3.40/Mcf, the highest annual wellhead price on record (ininflation-adjusted terms, it would be the highest annual averageprice since 1985).

The sharp rise in natural gas and oil prices have sent Apache Corp.’s earnings skyrocketing, and the CEO said yesterday the Houston-based independent would easily beat Wall Street estimates. Analysts have predicted earnings per share of $4.86, but CEO Raymond Plank said the company expects to earn $5.50 per share, about 20% higher than predicted.
