In NGI’s story, “El Paso Pulls Off FTC-Required Sellathon” inthe previous issue (see NGI, Jan. 10), it is erroneously statedthat CMS Energy Corp. purchased both the Sea Robin pipeline and ashare of the Destin Pipeline from El Paso Energy. CMS onlypurchased Sea Robin whereas the Destin Pipeline was sold to anundisclosed party. NGI regrets the error.

KCPL Leaves Western Resources at the Altar

Kansas City Power & Light Co. (KCPL) threw down its bouquetlast week, canceling its proposed merger with the financiallytroubled Western Resources citing doubts about Western’s growth andincreasing shareholder opposition to the transaction. KCPL canceledthe merger using a stipulation in the original agreement requiringthe merger to have all regulatory approvals completed by Dec. 31,1999. The merger suffered from regulatory delays and never receiveda final okay from FERC.

More Homes, But They’re Using Less Power

Average on-site energy consumption per household dropped by 27%between 1978 and 1997 while the number of U.S. households increasedby 33%, resulting in no change in total on-site residential energyconsumption over that 20-year period, according to a report fromthe Energy Information Administration (EIA). If the amount ofprimary energy required to generate and transmit the electricityconsumed by households is considered, then the decline inper-household energy consumption is only 16% because electricity’sshare of total household energy consumption increased between 1978and 1997.
