Crossroads Plans Expansion, Link to NGPL, N. Border

NIPSCO Industries, Inc. subsidiary Crossroads Pipeline isshooting for a 300% increase in system throughput with an extensionof its Midwest pipeline system to new interconnects with NorthernBorder Pipeline and Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America.Crossroads plans to hold an open season for an additional 500,000Dth/d of firm transportation services beginning Feb. 16 andconcluding March 31. The system currently transports about 150,000Dth/d from a connection with NGPL in Schererville, IN, to aconnection with Columbia Gas at Maumee, OH.

Analysts See Spring Price Plunge Followed by Major Winter Spikes

With weather forecasts producing bearish news at every turn andnational storage reserves looming ever larger, Raymond James &ampAssociates recently published a report projecting spot wellhead gasprices will drop below the $1.50/Mcf level before the beginning ofsummer. The study, however, also warns of a gas “price shock” inearly 2000, when gas shortages run rampant and production is unableto keep up because of sharp declines in exploration and productionspending. It seems the industry is in store for a spot marketroller coaster ride.

AGL CEO Takes Blame for Billing Fiasco, Warns of Exiting Sonat

Walter Higgins, CEO of AGL Resources Inc., stood and faced themusic recently at the annual shareholders meeting in Atlanta asstock owners voiced their opinions concerning AGL Resources’subsidiary Atlanta Gas Light’s (AGL) over-billing controversy. Thecompany’s earnings did nothing to ease shareholders’ pain. AGLResources’ revenues for this quarter were down $75.2 million from1997 to $323.9 million. Operating margins fell from $145.1 millionin the year-ago quarter to $136.9 million for the quarter endedDec. 31. Weather and poor results stemming from the company’spartnership with Sonat caused the poor performance.

NJ BPU Moves Forward On Energy Deregulation

New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman signed an energyderegulation bill last week, clearing the way for statewideelectric unbundling to occur by Aug. 1 and statewide, residentialgas unbundling to be in place by Dec. 31. The bill was passed bythe state’s legislature late last month (See NGI, Feb. 1).
