Negative news on the economy was shrugged off, and at the close July had gained 14.8 cents to $4.666 and August had risen 14.3 cents to $4.700. July crude oil surged $2.11 to $102.70/bbl.

Less Flooding Risk, Weak Economic Reports Propel June Loss

June natural gas futures retreated in active trading Tuesday, as traders noted a lessening of risk from Mississippi River flooding, but a bevy of weak economic reports proved difficult to ignore. At the close June had fallen 13.6 cents to $4.182 and July was down 13.3 cents to $4.246. June crude oil shed 46 cents to $96.91/bbl.

May natural gas futures were limited to a narrow 6-cent trading range and fell nominally as risk managers noted an uninspired market, and described their methodology for wringing value from a low-volatility trading environment.
