New Talisman Well in BC Expected to Produce 40 MMcf/d

Talisman Energy made a major natural gas find in northeastern British Columbia. A successful Paleozoic gas well in its core Monkman area tested at a restricted rate of 40 MMcf/d with maximum open flow potential of more than 75 MMcf/d. The company said the well, 20% of which is owned by Seneca Energy Canada Inc., should begin production at 40 MMcf/d by January.

NiSource, National Fuel, Equitable Show Improved Quarterly Results

Northeastern local gas distributors NiSource, National Fuel and Equitable Resources reported improved financial results for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2003, with NiSource Inc. delivering the largest quarterly improvement, a 70% gain in net income to $139.8 million, but also reporting a substantial decline for the year because of a charge for discontinued operations.

Gaz Metro, TransCanada Close on Additional Stake in PNGTS

Gaz Metropolitan & Co. and TransCanada Corp. increased their ownership stake in the northeastern-based Portland Natural Gas Transmission System (PNGTS) after closing on a $56 million purchase from El Paso Corp. The transaction was first announced last month (see Daily GPI, Nov. 19).

Berry Completes Uinta Basin Purchase from Williams

Berry Petroleum Co. has completed its $48.6 million purchase of Uinta Basin properties from Williams Production RMT Co. The properties, located in Brundage Canyon in northeastern Utah, currently are producing 1,800 net boe/d. Berry estimates the 43,500 acres have proved reserves of 8.6 million boe, comprised of 75% light oil and 25% natural gas.

Paramount Sees More Than 1 Bcf/d Impacted by Bitumen Policy in Alberta

The proposed plan by Alberta regulators to shut in 900 natural gas wells in northeastern Alberta on Aug. 1 to preserve crude bitumen production may have the immediate effect of curtailing 250 MMcf/d of gas production and stopping future gas development, but its impact is far more devastating than the numbers show, Paramount Energy Trust President Susan Riddell Rose said in a conference call last Thursday.
