Canadian Ambassador Balks at Price Floor Proposal in Revised Senate Energy Bill

Canadian Ambassador Michael Kergin said last week that he was “disappointed” the revised U.S. Senate energy bill has “resuscitated” a proposed price floor to encourage the construction of a 3,600-mile natural gas transportation pipeline from the North Slope to the Lower 48 states. He should be happy to learn then that the shelf life of the proposed subsidy will be short.

AEP’s New CEO Doesn’t See Any ‘Massive Reduction’ in Company’s Size

Michael Morris, who came up through the ranks of gas pipeline and distribution companies, will be taking over as president and CEO of American Electric Power (AEP) the first of next year. Morris, 57, currently chairman, president and CEO at Northeast Utilities System, will succeed E. Linn Draper, who announced in April 2003 that he intended to retire in 2004. Morris will also succeed Draper as AEP chairman upon Draper’s retirement from that position on or before April 27, 2004. Morris has served in his current role at Northeast Utilities since 1997. Previously Morris was president and CEO of Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, and president of CMS Marketing, Services and Trading. He also had served as president of Colorado Interstate Gas (CIG) and as executive vice president of marketing, transportation and gas supply for ANR Pipeline. Morris also founded and served as president of ANR Gathering Co., one of the first gas marketing companies in the U.S. Northeast Utilities said that its board of trustees would meet on Tuesday to name interim leadership at the New England-based power company.

Peevey Confirmed by CA State Senate for CPUC Job

Former energy industry and utility senior executive and unpaid adviser to the governor, Michael Peevey, was confirmed for a six-year appointment to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on a 32-3 vote of the 40-member state Senate. Governor Gray Davis reappointed Peevey to the regulatory commission on Dec. 31, 2002, designating him as president.

CA Governor Re-Appoints Peevey, Names A New Regulator

California’s Gov. Gray Davis re-appointed Michael Peevey, 64, to the California Public Utilities Commission and appointed his current cabinet secretary, Susan Kennedy, 42, to another spot on the five-member CPUC. Both are appointed to six-year terms and their new positions are subject to state Senate confirmation. Davis also re-appointed John Geesman to the California Energy Resources and Development Commission, which serves as the state’s primary energy policy/planning agency. Geesman, 51, the newest member of the commission was appointed to a full five-year term.
