Statoil ASA will continue to pursue opportunities both onshore and offshore in the United States, CEO Helge Lund said Wednesday.

The American Gas Association (AGA) partnered with the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) to host an “Outlook for the Natural Gas Industry” luncheon on Wednesday in an effort to extol the long-term virtues of natural gas, and to reveal the AGA’s agenda for the year. But if the questions asked by the attendees are any indication, then the investment community as a whole is quite concerned that the massive U.S. federal budget deficit may have dire taxation impacts on the U.S. energy industry.

On a day marked with impressive statistics from Rocky Mountain producers and a handful of protesters objecting to one of the luncheon speakers — Interior Secretary Gale Norton — the opening session of the 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Natural Gas Strategy Conference took the high road Tuesday, with speakers touting social and environmental responsibilities as the keys to sustainable shareholder profit in the future.
