CERA: Record Storage Levels May Cause ‘Abrupt’ Fall in Gas Prices

Some parts of the North American natural gas storage system may reach their operational limits this fall, resulting in “abrupt decreases” in gas prices as some storage fields are unable to receive injections, according to an analysis by Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA) that was released Monday.

Natural gas futures continued their range-bound dance Monday as May natural gas tested the upper limits of the recent $6.65 to $7.65 trading range. After hitting a high of $7.630 late in the afternoon, the prompt month went on to settle at $7.577, up 44.2 cents on the day.

Based on prior-day screen strength and continuing limits on available supply from the Gulf Coast, most points in the Gulf Coast, Midcontinent/Midwest and Appalachian markets were in rebound mode Friday. But overall price movement was mixed, with several points in the above areas along with the Northeast and much of the West flat to down as much as a little over a half dollar.

FERC: Freeport LNG Emissions Would Fall Within Houston/Galveston Annual Limits

Projected emissions from Freeport LNG Development LP’s proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal and natural gas pipeline “will be in conformity” with the emissions output that Texas has budgeted for the Houston/Galveston area for 2007, when the facilities are expected to start up, FERC said in a draft determination last Tuesday.
