Northeast Still Soft, But Most of Market Rebounds

Several retreating Northeast citygates failed to join rebounds from weekend weakness in the rest of the cash market Monday. In addition to prior-trading day support from Friday’s 16.4-cent rally by December futures and the return of industrial load from weekend hiatus, heating demand was picking up again in the Midwest and South after brief warming trends going into the weekend.

Berry Picks Plum Assets in East Texas for $640M

The land grab continues in the emerging natural gas-rich basins of East Texas, and Berry Petroleum Co. has become the latest to join the crowd, agreeing to pay $620 million in cash to buy 4,500 net acres. With the transaction, Berry’s output would increase by 32 MMcfe/d, and it would add 370 Bcfe to reserves.

Saracen Energy’s ‘Unfavorable Positions’ Seen as Boosting Gas Futures

Energy traders were abuzz Friday as reports circulated that Houston-based hedge fund Saracen Energy Partners LP is the latest to join the ranks of organizations that have recently recorded large losses on wrong-way trades in the natural gas futures market. Some traders pointed to the fallout as explanation for this week’s spike in natural gas futures.

Nymex Announces Support of ConfirmHub Confirmation Standard

ConfirmHub LLC said last week that Nymex Holdings Inc., parent company of the New York Mercantile Exchange Inc. (Nymex), has signed a letter of intent to join Amerex, GFI Group, ICAP Energy, Tullett & Prebon Energy, TFS Energy and Spectron in support of the ConfirmHub standard, which is the industry effort to provide standardized format delivery of confirmations via a single secure interface.

Fourth CA Offshore LNG Proposal Emerges from Tidelands Unit

Esperanza Energy LLC, a unit of San Antonio-based Tidelands Oil & Gas Corp., Wednesday became the fourth company to join the Southern California offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal competition with a proposal to develop two receiving platforms 10 miles off the coast at Huntington Beach, CA. Esperanza said it hopes to file an application by the end of this year.

At least 30 states will join Enron Corp. shareholders to pursue billions in damages from the company’s former banking partners. A legal brief filed last week in Houston by attorneys general from across the country claims the states’ residents who were Enron shareholders were injured by the company’s bankruptcy.

NYBOT Members ‘Overwhelmingly’ Approve ICE Merger

Voting to join the old with the new, members of the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT), a 136-year-old floor-based soft commodity exchange, voted overwhelmingly last week to merge with the rapidly expanding IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), one of the newest and fastest growing electronic exchanges, in a $1 billion-plus proposed transaction.
