A PG&E Corp. subsidiary broke ground last week on itsmassive La Paloma gas-fired power plant. The 1,048 MW generatingfacility will burn about 150 MMcf/d of gas and will be connected tothe Kern-Mojave Pipeline about 40 miles west of Bakersfield. Itwill be the largest merchant power plant in the state and isexpected to begin operations in summer 2001.

FL Utility Offers Unrestricted Non-Residential Choice

Breaking new ground in Florida’s gas industry, City Gas Co., anNUI Corp. utility subsidiary, announced last week that a newlypassed tariff has enabled third-party suppliers in its serviceterritory to sign commercial and industrial customers withoutrestriction. The new program, called the Commercial TransportationService, is the first choice program without limitations in thestate, City Gas said. The plan was approved in late November by theFlorida Public Service Commission (PSC).

Frontier Energy, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy,this week is beginning construction of its planned Warren Countydistribution system and touted gas’ role in the area’s economicrevitalization. The Warren County pipeline is part of a $55 milliondistribution system being built by Frontier to serve residents andbusinesses in seven northwestern North Carolina counties.
