Former MMS Official Pleads Guilty to Contract Wrongdoing

As Washington still was grappling with the shocking disclosure of illegal and inappropriate activities at the Interior Department’s Minerals Management Service (MMS), a former agency deputy associate last Monday pleaded guilty to a felony violation of the restrictions on post-government employment that involved the illegal awarding of a contract to a company of a retired agency colleague (see NGI, Sept. 15).

PanCanadian, MGV Tap Plan 250-Well CBM Program in Canada

After more than a decade of unsuccessful grappling with technical issues, Canadian producers have started to tap coal seams for natural gas on a commercial scale. PanCanadian Energy Corp. and MGV Energy Inc. have started producing coalbed methane CBM (CBM) with enough success to contemplate a 250-well program if the early trials keep on working out.

Conflicting Fundamentals Leave Traders Grappling for Price Clues

Feeding off late session gains notched Wednesday, natural gas futures plodder higher Thursday as traders continued to look past bearish fundamental factors to focus on the winter weather forecasts and modestly constructive technical indicators. However, an extremely light estimated volume of just 61,048 limited the market’s upside potential, and as a result, the January contract experienced an “inside-day” on the daily charts with a lower high and a higher low. The prompt month settled at $2.756, up 3.7 cents on the day.
