NW Hydro Supplies Face Feast and Famine

The always interesting Pacific Northwest promised in the opening days of February to get even more interesting from a hydroelectric energy standpoint with a near-term “dumping” of cheap hydro supplies only to be followed by well-below-normal water runoffs in the spring, all of which adds up to the potential for higher wholesale power prices, exports and natural gas demand in the region, according to Boston-based consultant Energy Security Analysts Inc. (ESAI). The Western Energy Coordinating Council (WECC) flagged the ESAI analysis in its latest “market watch report.”

No Hibernation Yet for Nymex Bears

Nymex bears got their Thanksgiving feast a few days earlyyesterday when they were greeted with a hearty helping ofprice-negative fundamental and technical news. And even before theopening bell sounded that sentiment was evident in the price levelas over the counter deals traded at a dime below Friday’s close.After opening at $2.34, the December contract tumbled lower to newlife-of-contract-lows before settling at $2.197, down a whopping23.7 cents or 8% for the day. Heavy estimated volume of 120,326served to punctuate the price move.

Futures Plod Lower on ‘Famine then Feast’ of News

Natural gas futures, which have been caught in a downtrend sincelast summer, ticked quietly lower yesterday in a dull tradingsession. No fresh news was seen to lift the market higher and as aresult, the March contract was free to follow the overall trend byslipping 1.9 cents to $1.776 at the close. And although the Marchcontract has only slipped 5 cents lower since becoming the promptmonth on Jan. 27, it has dropped a whopping 82.4 cents, or morethan 30% from its $2.60 high set on April 8.
