Economist Backs Arkansas Severance Tax Hike

Former natural gas industry executive Sheffield Nelson has enlisted the aid of economist Charles Venus in his campaign to raise the severance tax that Arkansas levies on natural gas production. Raising the tax to 7% would mean an additional $155 million per year for state coffers, the equivalent of less than a day and a half of profits for ExxonMobil Corp., Venus said recently.

KeySpan Urges Approval of Dominion’s Northeast Storage Project

KeySpan Energy, which has enlisted capacity in Dominion Transmission’s recently proposed Northeast Storage project, last week urged FERC to quickly certificate the proposed 9.4 Bcf of additional market area storage and an added 163,017 Dt/d of winter season firm delivery service (CP04-365). The fact that most of the capacity is already subscribed by LDCs for 10-year terms at maximum rates is evidence of the need for the facility, KeySpan said.
