Mexico’s Fox Throws Out Welcome Mat to Canadian Producers

Mexican President Vicente Fox, elected last year on a promise to improve the country’s economic future, has begun actively courting “out-of-towners” in the hopes of encouraging capital investments in his country. With several productive global trade missions completed, Fox now is turning his attention further north, courting Canadian oil and gas producers in his plan to develop Mexico’s untapped oil and gas reserves.

The board of directors of Southern Company elected President and CEO Allen Franklin as its chairman. Franklin replaces retiring Chairman A.W. “Bill” Dahlberg as the board’s new leader. Prior to the board electing him to the CEO position last month, Franklin had served as president and COO of Southern since 1999. From 1994 to 1999, he was president and CEO of Georgia Power, Southern’s largest subsidiary.

Tomasky had beengeneral counsel for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission from1993 to 1997. She will retain the title of general counsel for AEP,along with responsibility for the company’s legal policy,strategies and compliance, according to E. Linn Draper Jr., AEPchairman, president and CEO. “Since she joined AEP in 1998, Susanhas been an integral part of our management team ,” Draper said.

Conoco Inc. elected Archie W. Dunham chairman of the board,succeeding Edgar S. Woolard, Jr. Dunham will continue to serveConoco as president and CEO, as well as chair. Woolard and Gary M.Pfeiffer, a senior vice president and CFO of DuPont, resigned theConoco board as planned, at the conclusion of the company’ssplit-off from DuPont. Woolard is a former DuPont chairman, and hadbeen chairman of Conoco’s board since July 1998. He remains aDuPont director. Concurrent with his election as Conoco chairman,Dunham steps down from the DuPont board. The moves create twoadditional vacancies on Conoco’s board. The company said it expectsthese vacancies to be filled in the near future.
