Each week dozens of prognosticators toss out their predictions of the weekly gas storage change, the most significant piece of supply and demand information available in the gas market today. But it’s surprising to know that on average the predictions of 34 top firms, including five energy companies, 28 financial houses and one energy consulting firm, have been off by about 13.2 Bcf/week since the Energy Information Administration (EIA) took over the survey from the American Gas Association in May 2002.

Key Precedent Seen in Court Ruling on FERC-CAISO Governance Issue
Each side got something and the industry may have gotten what one energy legal observer called an “important precedent” in last week’s DC Circuit federal appeals court ruling (June 22) that FERC doesn’t have the authority to force California’s electric transmission grid operator, CAISO, to revise its state-mandated governing board, noting that the federal regulatory panel lacks the authority and was “over-reaching” in attempting to do so the past three years.

Following the announcement of a 72 Bcf storage injection, the June natural gas futures contract jumped 9 cents from $6.27 to trade at $6.36 as of 10:39 a.m, revisiting the high set on Tuesday. However, the contract then worked lower for the entire afternoon, trading within the $6.19-6.29 range, before settling at $6.219, down 9.1 cents on the day.

As part of Evening Cycle scheduling for Friday’s gas day, Tennessee said it anticipated adjusting each Zone 0 100 Leg Supply Aggregation Contract to a tolerance of 100 dekatherms. Pool receipts and deliveries will be adjusted based on rankings provided in the contract, the pipeline said. It also urged Zone 1 100 Leg Supply Aggregation customers to review their pool imbalances for Friday and resolve any exceeding the 100-dekatherm limit by Cycle 1 scheduling in order to avoid having those adjusted.
