Alberta’s role as an international natural gas supply mainstay will shrink as aging wells are depleted and domestic consumption rises, the province’s Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) confirms.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has given an environmental nod to Chestnut Ridge Storage LLC’s proposal to convert a depleted natural gas field in southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia into a high-deliverability, multi-cycle storage facility.

Despite price weakness at the end of 2006, cold weather in early 2007 depleted gas storage levels more than expected, and Schlumberger Ltd. CEO Andrew Gould told analysts last week that the company believes “fundamentals are clearly in place for reinforced natural gas activity later this year.”
