‘Microhole’ Rig Penetrates Dense Niobrara Gas Formation
Calling it a potential “game changer,” a hybrid “microhole” coiled tubing rig used on 25 test wells has penetrated a particularly dense Niobrara natural gas chalk formation along the Kansas-Colorado border, the Department of Energy (DOE) said last week. The DOE said the rig delivering 25-35% in cost savings per well and about 1 Tcf of shallow gas that otherwise would have been bypassed by conventional drilling.

Barnett Shale Now Largest Gas Producer in Texas, Crosstex to Build Pipe
From a trend once thought to be unpromising because of its dense rock formations, the Barnett Shale natural gas field in North Texas, unlocked by technology, has officially become the largest gas producer in the state, with output up 22% in 2004.

DOT Mulls High Pressure Waiver for PNGTS in Dense Population Areas
The Department of Transportation (DOT) said it was “considering granting” Portland Natural Gas Transmission System (PNGTS) a waiver of federal regulations that would permit it to continue to operate its pipeline at its established maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) even though two sections of its system now run through high-population density areas.
