Administration Seeks ‘Coordinated Approach’ to Transmission Siting

A Cabinet-level working group is in the process of developing a “coordinated approach” for permitting transmission lines on public lands to deliver primarily electricity generated from renewable fuels, said Interior Secretary Ken Salazar last Wednesday.

In preparation for the upcoming winter season, NiSource Gas Transmission & Storage (NGT&S) unit Columbia Gulf Transmission is holding an open season for capacity to deliver gas to Texas Eastern Transmission LP in St. Landry Parish, LA, the pipeline said. NGT&S is considering modifying or constructing new assets to facilitate the delivery of up to 176,000 Dth/d to Texas Eastern, with an anticipated in-service date of Nov. 1. Columbia Gulf is soliciting binding offers for firm contracts sourced from receipt points on the Columbia Gulf mainline near Delhi, LA, and delivered to the Texas Eastern St. Landry interconnect. Alaska’s Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $5 million contract for evaluation of alternatives for a natural gas pipeline to deliver gas from the North Slope to in-state markets to an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corp., the firm said Thursday.

Companies getting some of the $80 billion in federal energy-related economic stimulus funds are expected to not only be clean in the energy they deliver but “come clean” in how they spend the money.
