Short-Covering, Weather Prompt Advance; December Up by Double Digits

December natural gas made its debut as the spot futures contract by bounding higher Friday as traders cited the inevitability of weather-generated demand, and follow-the-leader-like buying as prices moved higher on heavy volume. At the close December had gained 15.9 cents to $3.923 and January was up 14.6 cents to $4.042. December crude oil digested a portion of Thursday’s large gains and settled 64 cents lower at $93.32/bbl.

Futures, Limited Cold Boost Prices at Most Points

With some help from a 13.3-cent gain Friday in the prompt-month debut by April futures and colder forecasts for most territory east of the Mississippi River, prices firmed at nearly all points Monday. The restoration of industrial load following its usual weekend decline also contributed to the overall advance.

Futures Climb 10.2 Cents as the East Bundles Up

After the January contract gapped 26.6 cents higher to open at $11.900 on Tuesday in its debut as the prompt month, the contract felt its way around, bouncing within a range from $11.670 to $12.150 before settling at $11.736, up 10.2 cents for the day.
