Forest Oil Corp. announced the completion of the Liard pipelineand initial production from the P-66A Well in the NorthwestTerritories. Production rates are anticipated to increase graduallyduring the next several weeks to a target rate of 35 to 50 MMcf/d,resulting in net sales of gas by Forest of 15 to 20 MMcf/d.Production is being transported and processed through the Westcoastsystem. Based on current prices, processing and transportationfees, and production costs, the netback for the production fromthis field is US$2.25/Mcf, the company said. Production from theFort Liard area is the first new gas to be brought on stream in theNorthwest Territories since the Pointed Mountain field in the early1970s. Forest has achieved production within 40 months of itsinitial participation in the Flett exploration program. Thisrepresents a significant achievement considering the remotelocation and lack of infrastructure in the area. It is expectedthat substantial reductions in cycle times will be achieved as aresult of the company-owned facilities now in place.

UK’s PowerGen Offers $5.4 B for LG&E

Although dwarfed by the news of the proposed NiSource-Columbiamarriage, LG&E Energy Corp. had some glad tidings of its ownlast week — it signed off on a definitive merger agreement forBritain’s PowerGen plc to acquire the Louisville, KY-baseddiversified energy company in a cash-and-debt transaction valued at$5.4 billion.

Tennessee expects its 300 Line in northern Pennsylvania to returnto service today following completion of repairs to Sunday morning’srupture (see Daily GPI, Feb. 29). Unlessconditions change, the pipeline will accept intra-day Cycle 1nomination increases beginning at 5 p.m. CST for all meters downstreamof Main Line Valve 314.

Southern Union, PNT Merger Completed

Southern Union has completed its merger with PennsylvaniaEnterprises. “The prompt completion of this merger is a vote ofconfidence by our regulators and shareholders, as well as thefinancial community,” said Southern Union President Peter H.Kelley. PEI shareholders will receive 1.59 shares of Southern Unioncommon stock and $3 in cash for each share of PEI common stock.Southern Union also announced a stock repurchase program not toexceed $40 million. It is issuing 17 million shares of common stockand is paying $32 million in cash in connection with thistransaction. In addition, on Oct. 5 Southern Union announced amerger agreement with Fall River Gas, a gas distributor serving48,000 customers in southeastern Massachusetts. The transaction,valued at $75 million.

El Paso Displays Post-Merger Form, Cuts 607 Jobs

El Paso Energy Corp. announced the completion of its post-mergercorporate structure last week. Through normal attrition, earlyretirement and 607 layoffs, the work force has been pared down from5,500 to 4,575. The action is part of a company-wide plan toimplement the optimal corporate organization for the future, ElPaso said, and the company expects to save in excess of $100million in the first full year after the merger due to thesemeasures.

Kinder Morgan and KN Energy announced the completion of theirmerger. The company has been renamed Kinder Morgan, Inc. and willtrade under the New York Stock Exchange symbol “KMI.” The $900million merger was announced last July.

TransCanada Promises $70 Million in Savings

It’s been a year since the completion of its C$11 billion mergerwith Nova Corp., but TransCanada Pipelines finally came through onpromised savings yesterday. The pipeline company said it will give$70 million in merger-related savings to its pipeline customersthrough “targeted operating cost reductions.” An agreement on thereductions was filed with Canada’s National Energy Board and theAlberta Energy and Utilities Board yesterday.
