Mirant Cleans Up After Plant Blast, Apologizes
Mirant Corp. said on Thursday that while it “clearly regretted” the explosion that occurred at 11:45 a.m. on May 16 at Unit #5 of its 447 MW New York plant in Tomkins Cove, near Stony Point (see Daily GPI, May 17), it would like to emphasize that there is no evidence the explosion has posed, or is posing any sort of threat to public health or safety.

Shell Exploration & Production Co. (SEPCo) outlined a planlast week to develop its strategic Gulf of Mexico (GOM) assetswhile cutting back on other deep-water projects. The plan includescommencing development on Shell’s 17th GOM project, the Brutus oiland gas play, while cutting up to $1.1 billion in E&P costs by2001. Shell’s 17 Gulf projects are the most of any GOM producer.
