The North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) has approved Progress Energy Carolinas’ (PEC) plan to build a 620 MW gas-fueled power plant to replace the coal-fired units at its L.V. Sutton Plant near Wilmington, NC, PEC said. The $600 million project is scheduled to be completed in 2014.

Terrible Ivan Draws Market’s Attention; Cash Prices Move Up 10-20 Cents
As Frances was breaking apart over Georgia and the Carolinas Tuesday, all eyes in the gas market quickly turned to Hurricane Ivan, which the National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicated may take a track similar to, but more westerly than, recent Hurricane Charley into the eastern Gulf of Mexico, possibly disrupting gas and oil production.
Utilities Withdraw GridSouth Filings in the Carolinas to Plan Revisions
Citing what they called “regulatory uncertainties” in the regional transmission organization (RTO) arena, Duke Energy, CP&L and South Carolina Electric & Gas last week announced that they were withdrawing their applications before state utility regulators in South Carolina and North Carolina to transfer functional control of their electric transmission assets to the GridSouth RTO. But the utilities also said that they remain committed to the GridSouth RTO and plan to file new applications before state regulators in the near future that will include a revised GridSouth structure.
Williams Files Sundance at FERC
Moving ahead with plans to establish a strong presence in theCarolinas, Williams’ gas pipeline unit said yesterday it has filedan application with FERC to construct and operate the previouslyannounced Sundance expansion project.
