Futures Push Higher Ahead of Holiday, Tropical Storm Bertha

The few traders still working on the day before the long Independence Day holiday weekend responded bullishly Thursday to news that only 85 Bcf had been injected into storage for the week ended June 27. The bullish number, teamed with concerns related to the development of Tropical Storm Bertha in the eastern Atlantic, helped August natural gas to a high of $13.587 before a regular session close of $13.577, up 18.8 cents from Wednesday and 37.9 cents higher than the previous week’s finish.

Post-Chapter 11 Calpine Eyes Carbon-Conscious Future

Weeks after emerging from two years in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Calpine Corp. senior officials Friday talked bullishly about the reorganized independent power plant developer’s future in a carbon-conscious environment. They think the company can take advantage of shrinking reserve margins and are talking up California and Texas markets in which the company has the majority of its fleet of natural gas-fired power plants.

New Gas, Power Transmission Lines in PG&E’s Plans, CFO Says

As part of an industry panel that generally talked bullishly about investment in new transmission infrastructure, PG&E Corp.’s CFO Christopher Johns stressed his utility company’s increased interest in investing in new interstate natural gas and electric transmission projects. While PG&E doesn’t want to own liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, the company wants to be able to access LNG wherever it lands in the West, Johns told a financial audience at the Citigroup’s First Annual Power, Gas and Utilities Conference in Miami, FL.
