Marathon Gains Independence, Debt from Steel Unit

In a long-anticipated announcement Tuesday, USX Corp. said it plans to break up its energy and steel businesses to give the companies more flexibility to expand and pursue acquisitions. The planned spin-off would completely separate USX’s two divisions, Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel Group and Houston-based Marathon Group, and comes following a five-month review of the corporation’s capital structure (see Daily GPI, Dec. 1, 2000).

A month has gone by since a special commission formed by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush recommended that the state break up its monopoly utilities and pave the way for competition in the power generation market, but still there has been no word from the legislature. There have been signs that the state senate will move much slower than previously expected on electric restructuring because of growing awareness of what can happen when power planning goes awry.

GPSC Gives Seniors a Break, Attacks Marketers

Working to find ways to ease the burden of high gas prices on its constituents, the Georgia Public Service Commission (GPSC) unanimously approved an additional $50 refund for low-income senior citizens on their bills for March. Low-income seniors are already receiving $10 refunds on their January, February and March bills, while all consumers are receiving $14 refunds on their February and March bills.

Unable to Break String of Losses, Futures Continue Lower

Despite forecasts calling for temperatures to return to normal,natural gas futures continued lower yesterday as traders pressuredprices to new one-month lows. The February contract was the hardesthit, tumbling 36.9 cents to close at $8.103, a hair beneath theJan. 3 low of $8.14. For the second session in a row, the outmonths remained relatively strong as the 12-month strip only sagged14.3 cents to close at $6.339.
