Now that the energy industry is done marveling at the shale gas revolution and is believing in abundant gas supplies for years to come, a similar North American supply renaissance is in the making in crude oil, Bentek Energy LLC’s Jim Simpson told attendees at GasMart 2011 in Chicago Wednesday.

Gas consumers have had a hard time believing it this winter, but the daily spot market has been their friend, said Jon Sorenson, a partner at Competitive Energy LLC, which manages energy purchases for about 20,000 power, gas and oil customers in New England, Atlantic Canada and Texas. Compared to the futures market, cash deals have been the most attractive option, he said.

Believing in the saying that “if at first you don’t succeed, tryagain,” El Paso began a new open season Friday to solicit interestin firm service agreements to move gas on an expansion of theBondad Line in the San Juan Basin. A previous attempt at a Bondadexpansion ultimately broke down after FERC rejected some of thetariff provisions last year, leading the primary expansion shipperto withdraw from the project and FERC to vacate its projectcertification (see Daily GPI, Jan. 7, 1998; Oct. 19, 1998; Dec. 11,1998; and Jan. 18, 1999).

Cash prices returned to a climbing mode Friday, and in theprocess won more converts to believing in a fundamentally stronggas market this spring and summer. Although Western gains tended tolag a bit behind, most increases were between a nickel and a dime.Most of the double-digit gains occurred in the Gulf Coast,Appalachian and Northeast market areas.
