New Mexico state officials promised Monday not to go quietly in the wake of White House intervention to speed up consideration of Houston-based El Paso Corp.’s plans to drill for coalbed methane in a pristine national forest region in the northeastern part of the state. An energy task force set up by the Bush Administration has overridden U.S. Forest Service opposition, according to a front page report in the Los Angeles Times.

Canadian Ambassador Balks at Price Floor Proposal in Revised Senate Energy Bill
Canadian Ambassador Michael Kergin said last week that he was “disappointed” the revised U.S. Senate energy bill has “resuscitated” a proposed price floor to encourage the construction of a 3,600-mile natural gas transportation pipeline from the North Slope to the Lower 48 states. He should be happy to learn then that the shelf life of the proposed subsidy will be short.
