KeySpan filed an application with the New York State PublicService Commission to expand the generating capacity of itsRavenswood power plant in Long Island City by 250 MW. Whencompleted in 2003, the expanded power plant, which will beprimarily fueled by natural gas, will be the cleanest and mostefficient generating station in New York City. Today, Ravenswood isthe city’s largest power plant with a capacity of 2,168 MW, or 28%of the electric generation located in New York City. “New York Cityhas a critical need for electric power,” said Chairman Robert B.Catell. “An expanded Ravenswood power plant would help ensure thatthe city has adequate capacity to meet the ever-increasing demandfor electricity.” This year, New York City is 300 MW short ofmeeting its reliability requirement for in-city electric-generationcapacity, and the city’s demand for electricity continues to growat the rate of 150 MW per year, the company said.

The National Energy Board received an application from AECSuffield Gas Pipeline Inc. (AEC Suffield) to construct and operatea gas pipeline from southeastern Alberta to southwesternSaskatchewan to be known as the North Suffield Pipeline. The60-mile pipeline extension will wrap around the northern part ofthe Suffield Military Block before it ties in to the existing AECSuffield meter station, which connects to TransCanada PipelinesLimited’s system near Burstall, SK. It would have a design capacityof 190 MMcf/d of gas and would cost C$22.3 million. AEC Suffield isplanning an in-service date of Nov. 1. AEC’s existing 72-mileSuffield pipeline was built in 1998 after a landmark decision bythe NEB. The ruling authorized a bypass around Nova Corp.’s40-year-old franchise in the chief gas-producing province ofAlberta and introduced market-based, negotiated tolling.

LG&E Energy and PowerGen plc filed a joint application withthe Kentucky Public Service Commission seeking approval of theirdefinitive merger agreement. The company hopes to have the KentuckyPublic Service Commission issue an order by May 15. In a separateaction yesterday, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)approved a merger of National Grid Group plc of the United Kingdomwith the New England Electric System of the United States — atransaction very similar to the LG&E Energy-PowerGen agreement.”This filing with the Kentucky Public Service Commission keeps uson schedule to complete the merger within nine to 12 months,” saidLG&E Energy Chairman and CEO Roger W. Hale. “In addition, theSEC’s approval of foreign ownership of a U.S. utility companyclearly helps move our approval process forward. Our transaction isvery similar to the National Grid Group-New England Electric Systemdeal.”
