With all of the recent headlines about massive natural gas shale plays in the Appalachian Basin, across Texas, Louisiana and British Columbia, some may have forgotten about the Rocky Mountains. However, by at least one estimate, there are seven multi-Tcf plays — and maybe more — trapped inside those big rocks waiting for discovery, said Wood Mackenzie researchers.

CNX is forecasting that its natural gas output will reach 64 Bcf in 2007, increasing by 15% in both 2008 and 2009.

Mixed Prices Return; Offshore Shut-Ins Fall Again
Based on prior-day screen strength and continuing limits on available supply from the Gulf Coast, most points in the Gulf Coast, Midcontinent/Midwest and Appalachian markets were in rebound mode Friday. But overall price movement was mixed, with several points in the above areas along with the Northeast and much of the West flat to down as much as a little over a half dollar.

Equitable Resources announced the closing of a $147 million sale of non-core gas properties to NCL Appalachian Partners, a partnership between Locin Oil Corp. and GE Commercial Finance Energy Financial Services. Equitable sold an estimated 66 Bcf of proved reserves, of which 59 Bcf were developed. Equitable expects that no gain or loss will be recorded and reiterated its 2005 supply sales estimate of 73 Bcf.

CONSOL Energy Inc., the second largest natural gas producer and reserve holder in the Appalachian Basin, has reported increases in both coalbed methane (CBM) production and reserve totals for 2004. The company increased its CBM reserves by 4% or 90 Bcf, to more than a Tcf during 2004, at the same time increasing production to 50 Bcf during the year, about 12% more than the 44 Bcf produced in 2003.
