Unocal’s Northrock Issues Bid for Gas-Rich Tethys

Unocal Corp. said on Friday that its Canadian subsidiary, Northrock Resources Ltd., has entered into an agreement via a take-over bid offer to acquire all of the common shares of Tethys Energy Inc., a Calgary-based oil and gas exploration company operating in Western Canada, for approximately C$144 million (US$93 million).

Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline LLC signed an agreement with Newington Energy, an affiliate of Consolidated Edison, to provide natural gas transportation service to a 525 MW power plant currently under construction in Newington, NH. Newington Energy broke ground on the natural gas-fired facility in September. Maritimes plans to construct and operate gas transmission facilities, including interconnecting piping and metering, from the existing lateral pipeline on Newington Energy’s property to the plant. When the plant is completed in 2002, it will generate enough power to supply electricity to more than 700,000 homes in New England.

CA Transmission Takeover Bill to be Introduced

A state legislative proposal will be introduced later this week to start the political process for implementing the agreement (MOU) between California’s governor and Southern California Edison Co. to return the utility to credit-worthiness in exchange for selling its transmission system to the state and assuring below-market power supplies from the utility’s existing fleet of hydro, nuclear and coal-fired power plants.

Two months after it first announced it had entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Midwestern Gas Transmission from El Paso Corp., Northern Border Partners LP (NBP) reported last week that it completed the estimated $100 million deal on April 30 after receiving approval from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Wiser Ups Gas Reserves with Invasion Energy Deal

The Wiser Oil Co., in an effort to boost its natural gas reserves, reported it has entered into an agreement to acquire Calgary-based Invasion Energy Inc. for an aggregate purchase price of C$55 million. Dallas-based Wiser said it has reached a deal with Invasion’s shareholders to acquire all outstanding common shares for C$33 million cash, and assume Invasion’s net debt of C$22 million.
