Study Predicts $3/MMBtu Rockies Gas Prices in 2005

With the 12- and 24-month gas futures strips above $6.50/MMBtu, gas producers even in the Rocky Mountain region are sleeping well at night. But Rockies producers may be in for a rude awakening by this time next year when prices are likely to plummet to nearly $3/MMBtu, according to Denver-based consulting firm Bentek Energy LLC.

Piedmont Posts Larger 4Q Loss, 28% Increase in Fiscal Year Net Income

Piedmont Natural Gas more than doubled its net loss for its fiscal fourth quarter, but reported a 28% increase in net income for the year ending Oct. 31 to $95.2 million, or $1.27 per diluted share, which includes $4.6 million, or $0.06 per diluted share, for one-time items. The weather for the year was 9% warmer than 2003, and 5% warmer than normal, but the company’s purchase last year of North Carolina Natural Gas (NCNG) contributed to improved margins and throughput.

Study: Drilling Boom Will Lead to $3/MMBtu Gas Prices in 2005

With the 12-month strip of Nymex gas futures prices near $6.50 and the 24-month strip not far behind, $3/MMBtu gas prices seem an impossible dream for many consumers and a bizarre nightmare for producers. However, a new study by Denver-based consulting firm Bentek Energy LLC predicts that by this time next year that’s exactly what the Rocky Mountain region and possibly the rest of the natural gas market will see.

As part of an internal reorganization, effective Jan. 1, 2005 Sempra Energy will consolidate its liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects into one business unit and merge its international businesses with a newly designated “pipeline/storage” business unit. Meanwhile, Sempra is pushing ahead with construction of its most advanced LNG project at Costa Azul in North Baja, Mexico.
