Larger upstream producers in Canada benefited from strong prices and healthy production levels in 1Q2005, which in turn should help the country’s energy industry meet its natural gas and oil output targets this year, according to a report by Standard & Poor’s (S&P).

ChevronTexaco Sees Continuing Decline in Domestic Production
In a 1Q2005 interim update issued Wednesday, ChevronTexaco Corp. said its U.S. liquids and natural gas production fell 1.5% from fourth quarter 2004 levels on normal field declines, operational factors and asset sales, which offset gradual restoration of volumes that were shut in last September during Hurricane Ivan. It’s total domestic production was down 19% compared to the first quarter of 2004.

The platform and pipeline damage from Hurricane Ivan is proving more difficult to repair than some producers thought as recently as last week. The Minerals Management Service (MMS) said on Friday that although about 1 Bcf/d of the 1.8 Bcf/d of gas production currently shut in could return to service by the end of October, it may take much longer to restore the remaining 800 MMcf/d portion.
