The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) denied a request by a unit of New Fortress Energy Inc. (NFE) to renew its special permit to transport LNG by rail, further closing the door for the company’s export plans in New Jersey.

On Monday, the PHMSA denied the 2021 request from Energy Transport Solutions LLC, an NFE unit proposing an export hub in Gibbstown, NJ (application no. 20534–R). The agency has been considering the request for several years after the permit was intended to expire.

NFE planned to ship liquefied natural gas cargoes by truck or by rail from a proposed facility in Wyalusing, PA, to its New Jersey export hub.
