Houston-Based Multifuels LP is planning a 6-6.5 Bcf expansion of the East Detroit gas storage field in Lamar County, AL. The company is holding an open season through June 18 on the proposed Freebird Gas Storage project.

East Detroit was converted to a 2 Bcf storage field in 2001 by the Northwest Alabama Gas District with $20.3 million in revenue bonds that were issued in 2000 by the district, a municipally-owned natural gas utility company that serves 15,000 customers in seven counties. Earlier this year Multifuels signed an agreement to operate the field and plan an expansion.

The facility is connected to the District’s own gas distribution system servicing northwestern Alabama but is located near several interstate and intrastate pipelines. Multifuels plans to add a direct connection to Tennessee Gas Pipeline and provide indirect service to Transcontinental Gas, Southern Natural and Florida Gas Transmission. It also plans to increase the injection and withdrawal rates from 30 MMcf/d and 20-30 MMcf/d, respectively, to 175 MMcf/d of injection and 125-175 MMcf/d of withdrawal service. The expansion project is targeted for operation in summer 2005.
