The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will considerthe confirmation of Commissioner William Massey to a second term atFERC at a hearing this Thursday. There, he is expected to get awarm reception.

“I don’t suspect it will be too controversial,” said DerekJumper, a press aide for the Senate committee. He added that heknew of no committee members who opposed Massey’s renomination orplanned to block it.

Jumper said the committee probably would vote on Massey’sre-appointment after July 6 and before the summer recess on July31, and then would forward it to the full Senate for a vote.Massey’s current term expires on June 30, but he will be able tocontinue serving on the Commission while the Senate considers hisnomination. If approved by the Senate, his new term would expireJune 30, 2003.

Massey, a Democrat, was first nominated by President Clinton toFERC and confirmed by the Senate in May 1993. Prior to joiningFERC, he practiced law in Washington, and served as chief counselfor Sen. Dale Bumpers (D-AR).
