The City of New York said it’s prepared to go to court toprevent the construction of the Millennium Pipeline project alongproposed routes that would pose a threat to its water supply.

“While the city is prepared to work with Millennium Pipeline andFERC to explore possible alternatives, we are likewise committed topursue any and all legal remedies, should it become necessary, toprotect the integrity and quality of the water supply to the NewYork metropolitan area,” said William N. Stasiuk, deputycommissioner/director for the Bureau of Water Supply, Quality andProtection for New York City’s Department of EnvironmentalProtection.

“…FERC approval of the proposed routes would pose apotentially catastrophic threat to the water supply, and thereforeit is imperative that the issue of the route of any pipeline mustbe resolved in a fashion which will avoid jeopardy to our system,”he said in a letter to the Commission.

Representatives of the cities of New York and Yonkers recentlyreviewed all of the proposed Millennium routes that would gothrough the City of Yonkers, Stasiuk noted. They concluded that theproposed routes would endanger New York City’s water supply and thepopulation served by that supply, which includes Yonkers.
