South Carolina Electric & Gas will replace coal-burninggenerating equipment at its oldest fossil fuel facility in Aiken,SC, with two natural gas-fired turbines generating 150 MW each. The$180 million project at the Urquhart station will be designed andbuilt by Duke/Fluor Daniel for completion in June, 2002.

“This is truly the best outcome we could hope for,” said NevilleLorick, vice president of fossil/hydro operations for SCE&G.”We get badly needed new electric generation. We get to keepexisting generation and make it more environmentally friendly. Weget to prolong the operating life of the oldest fossil plant on oursystem. And we get to remain a part of this community for manyyears to come.”

The intermediate peaking units could use 38,500 MMBtu/d of gaswhen at running at capacity. Besides producing 300 MW the combinedcycle turbines will use waste heat to create steam that powers twoexisting 75 MW turbines at the plant. It will continue to burn coalin one unit with a production capacity of 100 MW, which will bringpeak capacity from the Urquhart facility to an overall total of 550MW. The facility currently generates 250 MW burning 700 tons ofcoal a day.
