The Port of Corpus Christi in South Texas moved a record amount of tonnage last year, driven primarily by higher crude oil and LNG shipments.

Goods jumped 8.1% year/year to 203 million tons (Mt). The port said crude oil exports were the biggest factor, which jumped 12.5% to 126.1 Mt. A record volume of 16.3 Mt of liquefied natural gas transited the Corpus Christi Ship Channel last year as well. Agricultural commodities and refined products also jumped over the same time.

Oil and gas exports have increased from the port as volumes have risen from nearby production areas like the Eagle Ford Shale and Permian Basin. Output from Cheniere Energy Inc.’s 15 Mt Corpus Christi liquefaction plant also has steadily increased since it produced first LNG in 2018.
